1. Increasing Server Performance
FLM

As
your PC has only one processor, many servers also have
a single CPU. Adding more processors that can work together
can increase server performance. Many manufacturers
offer multiprocessor servers, and Advanced Server supports
enhanced symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), which enables
to you use multiprocessor servers.
Another
way to increase server performance is to add memory,
which allows the computer to work with more information
at once. Advanced Server can increase available memory
for server processing to as much as 8 GB.
2. Increasing Server Availability
Server
downtime can result in lost revenue, wasted IT staff
work, and unhappy customers. To address this, FLM Online
promotes the clustering technologies found in Windows
2000 Advanced Server. Not only do these technologies
let more than one server work together on a particular
task, but they also increase server availability by
providing a safety net if one of the clustered servers
should fail. There are two clustering technologies in
Advanced Server. The first, called the Cluster Service,
is used to link individual servers so they can perform
common tasks. If one server stops functioning, its workload
is transferred to the other server.
The
second clustering technology, called Network Load Balancing
(NLB), is used to make sure a server is always available
to handle requests. NLB works by spreading incoming
client requests among a number of servers that are linked
together to support a particular application. So as
more visitors come to your site, you can incrementally
increase capacity by adding servers. This type of expansion
is known asscaling out.
Advanced

software applications that run on affordable standard
PC server and storage hardware. Major system vendors

and Data General, all of which take advantage of Cluster
Service.
