What the IT Manager Should Know
Windows
2000® Advanced Server®
5.c. Cluster Administrator
Cluster
Service in Advanced Server is easier to set up
and use than in prior versions of Windows. With
a substantially improved Setup Wizard, Cluster
Service setup requires less than 10 mouse clicks
for your first cluster node, and less than 4 clicks
to create the second node. Combined with the improved
Cluster Administrator and support for plug-and-play
hardware, Cluster Service makes building clusters
remarkably simple.
You
have a wide range of options for configuring clustered
applications. Policies governing fail-over and
fail-back timing, as well as the preferred server
for a set of clustered resources, give you broad
flexibility in defining what happens in the event
of a failure. This means you can tailor the way
different applications react to failures to best
suit your business needs.
Once
your cluster is established, management is straightforward.
The Cluster Administrator lets you visually monitor
and manage all resources on the cluster from a
central location, which can be remote. The Cluster
Administrator also lets you reconfigure clustered
resources without taking important data and applications
offline for a significant period of time. For
example, you can move resources from one server
to another to better balance the workloads, and
you can remove all the resources from a server
for maintenance or testing.
