What the IT Manager Should Know
Windows
2000® Advanced Server®
5.b. Broad Service & Support
Cluster-aware
resources that support fail-over and automatic
recovery include: Windows Internet Name Service
(WINS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP),
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Network
News Transport Protocol (NNTP), and the Windows
2000 Distributed File System (DFS).
A
file share resource can serve as a DFS root or
share its folder subdirectories for efficient
management of large numbers of related file shares.
Advanced
Server includes a standard, cross-platform application-programming
interface (API) for developing and supporting
cluster-aware applications. This Component Object
Model (COM)-supported cluster API can be used
to create scalable, cluster-aware applications,
which can automatically balance loads across multiple
servers within the cluster. These applications
can be accessed by the Windows Script Host to
control cluster behavior and automate many cluster
administration tasks.
