What the IT Manager Should Know
Windows
2000® Advanced Server®
3. Multiple Servers: One View
Though
multiple servers are used, the cluster appears
to be a single system to clients and applications.
Cluster Service ensures the availability of critical
line-of-business and other back-end systems, such
as MS Exchange Server or a MS SQL ServerÔ 7.0 database acting
as a data store for e-commerce. Should one server
stop functioning, a process called fail-over
automatically shifts its workload to another server
in the cluster to provide continuous service.
This way, although users may experience temporarily
degraded performance, they will not completely
lose access to the system.
Figure
1: Cluster service assures continuous service
by letting one server take over for another in
the case of a failure.
